Open Roads...a running blog

There are clubs you can't belong to, neighborhoods you can't live in, schools you can't get into, but the roads are always open. - Nike

4 miles

Didn't eat much all day and my stomach was queasy. Kept a good pace but felt horrible, and my stomach was upset the rest of the night.

9x800-6.2 miles

Ran each interval at a 9:53 pace, so if Yassos really work, I'm on track for a sub-4 hour marathon. We'll see. I felt good, was only going to go seven intervals. I also cut down my recovery time. I was using .25 miles, but really .15 was more than enough. Ran in the new performance shoes again and feeling a little sore, need to get back in my neutral shoes for a couple of runs.

8 miles

Ran early in the morning, it was dark for the first hour of my run. I had a nice time, felt good, kept a good 9:30 pace or so. Ran in the performance shoes again and the last couple of miles I could really feel the pounding in my legs and back...they just don't do much for you when you get tired I guess. Not sore or anything though.

3 miles

First run in some new performance shoes. So light and airy, I just loved them, especially at the end of a short run like this, I could really kick.

15 miles

Whew! Nice run along parts of the marathon course, and my fiance rode his bike along with me. Felt good by the end, kept a 9:53 pace average, though the last 5 miles I really sped up.

11 miles

Ran with some friends but we all sort of ended up going our own pace. We ran around the tidal basin and mall...parts of the marathon course. I felt solid, it was nice to run a comfortable distance and rest a little.

20K race-12.5 miles

Great race, though we showed up late and were about 10 minutes behind the crowd. I ran around an 8:30-8:45 pace, which felt surprisingly good. I wasn't sure what my body could do, not having raced since pre-injury.

Weekly Mileage-29 miles

Getting up there now. I feel strong and I feel like my speed is slowly increasing along with the miles. Strength training is also going well.

5 miles

We had a BBQ last night so I was dehydrated and tired this morning, but at least the heat has let up some and I was fine doing 5 miles. I felt it was important because I am trying to stick to my schedule and I didn't want to cut this run down and have next week's mileage jump more than 10 percent. Can't believe I used to run hung over all the time in college!

12 miles-LSD

One of those runs where from mile 1 I didn't feel like running. Even though I didn't run yesterday, I did weight train so my legs felt heavy. Partly I was tired from getting up at 5:30 AM to beat the heat. The second half went much better...maybe because of Gu? Ran average 10:12 miles, about 15 seconds faster than my last long run and a little slower than I'd like to be. I'd like to race the 20k next weekend in 9s, but I don't know.

3 miles

Heavy legs today! Even heavy lungs for the slow pace I maintained. Yesterday was a GREAT workout, making today definitely a recovery run. Also, incredibly hot, the heat index was probably somewhere around 90 degrees by the time I hit the road at 6:15 AM. I've really adjusted though, especially since early morning runs aren't done in the direct sunlight. I am soaked to the bone after I run these days from sweating so much. Soon enough the heat will pass. And maybe I'll be a better runner for it. I'm running a 20K in a week and a half, wondering if I'm crazy in the August DC sun.

4 miles-5x800-34:10

Trying out Yasso 800s. I'd like to run a 3:40 marathon but 4 would make me happy enough this time around, so I ran 4:00 minute 800s with 400 meters recovery run in between. Tough, I was soaked to the bone with sweat when it ended. But I did it!
